As the old saying goes, 'Everything in it's place and a place for everything'. If your wardrobes are laid out correctly then its much easier to keep everything tidy. Have a read through our hints and tips and see if there's anything that can help your messy wardrobes out.

1. Layout

Take a look at your wardrobes. Is there space in there that's not fully utilised or is there space where everything is just 'thrown in'? These spaces can be made more useful by adding shelving or extra hanging rails, making it easier to organise and, more importantly, find your clothes when you need them.

2. Declutter every 6 months

This is one of the hardest things to do but often gives the greatest results. Be brutal and ask yourself if you're ever going to wear that fluorescent green cardigan again or whether you need to keep that pair of expensive, but now a bit tatty, black court shoes. We know it's tough to let go but often, if you haven't worn something in the last year, you're probably not going to wear it again. Be brave! Empty your wardrobe completely, have a good clean and vacuum round and then decide what needs to go back in the wardrobe and what can go to the charity shop.

3. Adding purpose made storage

Purpose made wardrobe organisers can make a huge difference to the way you use a wardrobe. Items such as pull out trouser rails can maximise the storage potential of a small area and make it easy to access everything within that space. Selecting an outfit has never been easier.

4. Don't waste the height of your room

The full height of your wardrobe can be used with the addition of a pull down hanging rail. These can be used to hang a lot of your lighter items of clothing and the rail is spring loaded to ensure it pulls down easily to an accessible height. It also has a soft close mechanism built into it so returning it to its original position is as simple as giving it a gentle push.

5. Use the backs of your doors

Adding hooks and hangers to the backs of your wardrobe doors can give much needed storage for belts, ties and scarves without sacrificing internal space. Just ensure that you use the right length screws as the ones supplied are usually too long for a standard wardrobe door!

6. Look under the bed!

The space under your bed is often full of nothing but junk, empty boxes and dust! Utilise the space fully by adding wheeled boxes which can be pulled out easily for access. These are perfect for shoe storage and linen and towels in vacuum pack bags. These vacuum bags allow you to store up to four times as much in the same space and keeps you clothes and linen in an air tight, waterproof package.

7. Use hangers that can hold multiple items

These types of hangers can be found easily online from companies such as amazon. They allow a single hanger to carry up to 4 items.

A good tip for these is to keep similar items of clothing on the same hanger. For example, t-shirts of the same colour or V-neck jumpers in a range of colours. This helps when choosing outfits.

8. Save your hanging space for your best clothes

Don't waste hanging space on clothes that will be just as happy carefully folded and put in a drawer. Good quality clothes will remain at their best when hung in their own space on the correct type of hanger. Wire coat hangers are a no-no when it comes to quality clothing, make sure you use the right hanger!

9. Add lighting

There's nothing worse than rummaging around in a dark wardrobe. Although adding lighting to an existing wardrobe isn't always practical, these battery operated sensor lights from Ikea are a great alternative. They are LED which means you wont be constantly changing bulbs or batteries and they have a light sensor which means they come on when you open the door and go off automatically when you close it. These can transform your wardrobe for a very reasonable price.

10. Decide whether your storage works for you

Ultimately, if you're trying to make your wardrobe do something it just wont then it may be worth considering a complete redesign. With the right design, you'll be guaranteed the right amount of storage for the clothes you own and there will be 'a place for everything'. The correct combinations of full height, two-thirds height and half height hanging, shoe storage, jewellery and bag storage all add up to the perfect closet solution for you.

<![CDATA[Making the most of your storage space]]>Sun, 07 Feb 2016 21:31:25 GMThttp://eliteinteriorslondon.com/blog/making-the-most-of-your-storage-spaceJust creating a built in unit for space isn't always enough to create usable storage. The first thing we ask our clients is "What, exactly, do you need to store in this unit"? This is the most important thing as everyone's needs are different.
If people need lots of hanging space we can add multiple hanging rails but there's no point in having a hanging rail that you can't reach, is there? For these situations we offer pull down hanging rails which have a spring action, allowing you to easily pull the rail down to a reachable height and then put it back into place with a simple push.

This allows you to utilise the extra height in your wardrobe without it being an irritation. No more standing on a box when you're selecting an outfit!!
